This is the decision, and it is the one people get wrong. A typical Indian router handles 20–30 clients before it degrades, and your phones, laptops, TV and cameras are already using that budget. Each Wi-Fi switch is another client. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices consume zero router capacity — the hub is one client no matter whether it carries five devices or a hundred and fifty. A 3 BHK with 40–60 automation points is not a Wi-Fi project.

In India this matters more than any other row in this table. Broadband outages here are routine rather than exceptional. With a local hub, Zigbee and Z-Wave scenes, schedules and wall switches keep working through one. Most Wi-Fi devices route commands through a vendor cloud, so an ISP outage turns your switches into ordinary switches — and sometimes not even that, if the physical button was replaced by a touch panel that needs the cloud to respond.

Our Verdict

Under about ten devices in one or two rooms, Wi-Fi is fine and the hub is not worth it. For anything approaching whole-home — and certainly for a 2 BHK upwards — go Zigbee, with Z-Wave reserved for the corners of the house where 2.4 GHz will not carry. The deciding factor in India is rarely the spec sheet: it is that a Zigbee or Z-Wave home keeps working through a broadband outage, and a Wi-Fi home usually does not.
